Marisa

Hi! I’m Marisa Borgia, a single mom of a 4-year-old son, former foster mom, poodle mom, registered nurse, and IBCLC. I’ve been a nurse since 2015. I worked at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for 11 years, 5 as a nurse, before entering the Public Health realm in 2020 as a nurse at a local non-profit organization. I currently work with low income, substance-involved families from the prenatal period until the child’s 3rd birthday. Through fostering, I have experienced a wide range of behaviors and parenting challenges, which has led me to explore and practice new parenting techniques.

Through my parenting journey, I became passionate about breastfeeding and lactation, which led me to becoming an IBCLC so I can help other mothers meet their breastfeeding goals. When I delivered my son, different nurses would come in and try to teach me different breastfeeding techniques, but every nurse had a different way of doing things, none of which is how I should have been learning to breastfeed. I begged for a lactation consultant and never had one come in. From this experience, and figuring out breastfeeding on my own, I decided to become an IBCLC so other mothers don’t experience what I did.

With any of my services, we will look at the whole picture, not just the challenge you come to me for. With newborn care, feeding, lactation, sleeping, and toilet training, we will look at milestones, feeding, sleep, and any medical background before coming up with a plan together. We work together to overcome your challenges!

As a Mama Coach, I am here to support you through your pregnancy and parenting journey. I provide services from pregnancy through childhood in areas of prenatal education, newborn care, feeding, lactation consultation, sleeping, and toilet training. If you are looking for support, please contact me! I would love to help!

Frequently Asked Questions

Good question!  We are called The Mama Coach because years ago, when Carrie’s first boy was very small, she often wondered out loud to herself, “Where is my Mama Coach?” and “I need a Mama Coach!”.  Carrie searched and searched for qualified support and realized there was a need for qualified support for new families. We recognize that our name can give the impression that we only serve moms, but we will continue to work and learn to ensure our messaging is clear that all people are welcome here. Parents carry a heavy load, and do it with grace.  All parents deserve support, and The Mama Coach is the answer you’ve been searching for.

We do not just support moms — we help ALL people.  All are welcome here, and we are committed to providing you with quality support, no matter your gender or family dynamic.  As we learned in nursing school, your family is who YOU say they are.

We get asked this one all the time.  As Registered Nurses, having merely one method does not align with how we were trained in University to utilize the nursing process.

The Nursing Process is defined as, a “systematic approach to care using the fundamental principles of critical thinking, client-centered approaches to treatment, goal-oriented tasks, evidence-based practice (EDP) recommendations, and nursing intuition.  Holistic and scientific postulates are integrated to provide the basis for compassionate, quality-based care” (*1).

Simply put, we will assess your child using our nursing training to determine the best way to help your family reach their goals, walking beside you all the way.  You can choose us with confidence, knowing you have picked the most qualified resource to support your family’s journey.

Yes.  As Registered Nurses, we have years of training on where to access credible guidelines and information. All of our programming is based on extensive research from credible sources.

As Registered Nurses, it is our professional obligation to manage client records and confidential information properly.  We use an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) that is compliant throughout North America.  Even though we share the same brand, we are all independent Registered Nurses with our own private practices. As such, we each have our own EMR that is private and secure. We do not share EMR or client information between one another without consent.

Often they are — the answer largely depends on where you live and what your private insurance covers.  For example, in Canada, our services are covered under ‘Lactation’, ‘Registered Nurse Services’ or ‘Health Spending Accounts’.  In the United States our services can be covered as well, through HSA or FSAs.  Reach out to me for more information.
